Grape seed extract kills cancer cells

Fitness Tips...Washington: Cancer cells, which kill nearly 12,000 people in the US alone every year and affect more than half a million worldwide, could be eradicated with grape seed extract, reveals a study.
The extract creates conditions unfavourable for the cancers' growth by damaging both their cells' DNA and stops the pathways that allow repair.
"It's a rather dramatic effect," said Rajesh Agarwal, study investigator at the University of Colorado Cancer Centre and professor at the Skaggs School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
"Cancer cells are fast-growing cells. Not only that, but they are necessarily fast growing. When conditions exist in which they can't grow, they die," said Agarwal, according to a university statement... Read More click on Lifestyle news

Goa: Assembly Polls 2012

 The history of Goan politics

The history of Goan politics dates back to first assembly election of the union territory of Goa, Daman and Diu in 1963 for a 30-member house.  Goa, Daman and Diu Reorganization Act, 1987 paved the way for the creation of Goa as a separate state in 1987. But instability of a series of state governments since the new state was formed is a stark reality of the state politics.

Both the national and regional parties came to power in the state but the state witnessed 15 Chief Ministers during 1990 to 2005. That means a Chief Minister was changed in the duration of a year. BJP leader Manohar Parrikar was the first Chief Minister in the last one and a half decade of the state politics to lead a government for little less than five years from 2000 to 2005, barring a gap of over three months from February to June 2002.

ILO (International Labour Organization) Has Released 600 Million Jobs in Next Decade

World News :- The International Labour Organization has released a pessimistic report of the global jobs market in 2012 saying urgent attention is needed to create 600 million new jobs in the next 10 years.

"Despite strenuous government efforts, the jobs crisis continues unabated, with one in three workers worldwide, or an estimated 1.1 billion people, either unemployed or living in poverty," said ILO director-general, Juan Somavia, in the Global Employment Trends 2012 report.

"What is needed is that job creation in the real economy must become our number one priority," he said.

"Whether we recover or not from this crisis will depend on how effective government policies ultimately are."

The report said governments must coordinate and act decisively "to reduce the fear and uncertainty that is hindering private investment so that the private sector can restart the main engine of global job creation."

ILO senior economist Ekkehard Ernst said at a press conference the recovery started in 2009 was short-lived and there were nearly 29 million fewer people in the labour force now than "would be expected based on pre-crisis trends".

"Our forecast has become much more pessimistic than last year, with the possibility of a serious deceleration of the growth rate," he said.

The report refers to "discouraged workers", those who have decided to stop looking for work because they feel they have no chance of finding a job and are considered economically inactive.

"If these discouraged workers were counted as unemployed, then global unemployment would swell from the current 197 million to 225 million, and the unemployment rate would rise from six percent to 6.9 percent," Ernst said.

Young people continued to be the hardest hit by the jobs crisis.

"Judging by the present course," the report says, "there is little hope for a substantial improvement in their near-term employment prospects."

The ILO says 74.8 million youths aged 15-24 were unemployed in 2011, an increase of more than four million since 2007 in the total global labour force of 3.3 billion.

Globally young people are nearly three times as likely as adults to be unemployed. The global youth unemployment rate, at 12.7 percent, remains a full percentage point above the pre-crisis level.

Ernst and fellow ILO economist Moazam Mahmood recommended additional public spending "to support both the domestic and global economies."

The report warned that outside Asia, developing regions have lagged behind developed economies in labour productivity growth, raising the risk of a further divergence in living standards along with limiting prospects for poverty reduction.

China Makes Its Own Magnetic Train

World News, Beijing: A Chinese locomotive company has rolled out the country's first home-made magnetically levitated (maglev) train that creates less pollution than the conventional ones and ideal for transport in the urban and ecologically fragile tourist areas.

The low-cost three-carriage train is designed to run at a maximum speed of 100 km per hour and carry 600 passengers, a news agency reported.

Trains run on coal or diesel creates more pollution. Maglev also runs quietly, said Xu Zongxiang, general manager of the Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd., maker of the train in central Hunan province.

A conventional train moves forward by using friction between its wheels and the track. The maglev replaces wheels by electromagnets and levitates on the guideway.

"It's ideal for mass transportation, as it is quiet and environment-friendly. Its manufacturing cost is about 75 percent of a conventional light-rail train," news agency said.

Maglev has a minimum turning radius of 50 meters and can run easily in the residential areas or on the hilly slopes. "It's an ideal public transport option for Chinese cities and major tourist destinations," news agency said.

Railway transport specialist Liu Youmei said the new train is green, economical and safe. "It can be used for public transport in populous areas and at scenic spots with fragile environment.

"Liu said China is one of a few countries that used maglev technology.Beijing is currently building a maglev route that will be operational next year, news agency said.

Currently, a German-made maglev train is operated in Shanghai city. It went into operation December 31, 2002.

Popcorn Discovered in Ancient Coastal Peru

Fitness News,  Washington: Coastal Peruvians munched popcorn a 1,000 years earlier than previously estimated, even before the use of ceramic pottery.

Some of the oldest known corncobs, husks, stalks and tassels, dating from 3,000 to 6,700 years ago were found at Paredones and Huaca Prieta, two mound sites on Peru's arid northern coast.

Characteristics of the cobs, the earliest ever discovered in South America, indicate that the sites' ancient inhabitants ate corn several ways, including popcorn and flour corn.

However, corn was still not an important part of their diet, the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences reports.

The research group, led by Tom Dillehay from Vanderbilt University and Duccio Bonavia from Peru's Academia Nacional de la Historia, also found corn microfossils: starch grains and phytoliths.

Said Dolores Piperno, curator of New World archaeology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History who co-authored the report, "Corn was first domesticated in Mexico nearly 9,000 years ago from a wild grass called teosinte."

"Our results show that only a few thousand years later corn arrived in South America where its evolution into different varieties that are now common in the Andean region began," she said, according to a museum statement.

"This evidence further indicates that in many areas corn arrived before pots did and that early experimentation with corn as a food was not dependent on the presence of pottery," added Piperno.

Corncobs and kernels were not well preserved in the humid tropical forests between Central and South America, including Panama, the primary dispersal routes for the crop after it first left Mexico about 8,000 years ago.

"These new and unique races of corn may have developed quickly in South America, where there was no chance that they would continue to be pollinated by wild teosinte," said Piperno.

We Eat Breakfast in Just 3 Minutes, Reveals Study

Get The Lifestyle News Updates, London: On an average, people spend just three minutes and 15 seconds on a weekday breakfast, and most of the time they eat it standing up as they are pressed for time, a new study has found.
According to the survey commissioned by a food company, only half of us eat breakfast at all, and many prefer to have a lie-in, while others blame the growing pressure to get to work early.
The study also found that only a third of us now eat breakfast in the kitchen. Some resort to eating it in the bedroom, or even the bathroom, with 22 per cent getting dressed at the same time.
Around a fifth manage to eat only half their breakfast because they have so little time, while more than a third say they eat their first meal of the day on the bus or train.
In Birmingham, 59 per cent of the people said that they were too busy on the Internet or watching TV in the morning to eat breakfast.
In London 57 per cent said the same, and 52 percent of people from Bristol and 51 per cent of Mancunians agreed.
One in seven eat at their desk at least one morning a week, and one in five confess to grabbing something as they run out of the door and eating it while they walk down the street.
However, three-quarters still said it was the most important meal of the day, and seven in ten always have a hot breakfast.
"Encouragingly, the research indicated that possibly 1.2million of us find time to eat a hot breakfast every single morning and demonstrates that Brits do understand the importance of breakfast, even going as far as eating it on the bus, or in the bathroom, to try and fit it in," the Daily Mail quoted Sian Porter, a company spokesman as saying.

'Bipasha' Number of 'Jodi Breakers’ Movie is Original, Claims Salim Merchant

Entertainment News from Mumbai: Six years back when Beyonce and Shakira came together for the song ‘Beautiful Liar’, it was deemed as one of the hottest music videos ever produced. Now a song in Bipasha Basu's new film ‘Jodi Breakers’, named 'Bipasha' sounds way too 'inspired' by the number featuring the two international hotties.
We wonder why Salim-Sulaiman would create something that sounds way too similar to the English track, and not expect it to be noticed?
Says composer Salim Merchant, "I don't really know which song you are talking about, but what we have created is an original number. We make sure none of our music sounds similar to anyone else's. Even if it sounds similar, it will never be entirely the same."
On her part, Bipasha says, "A lot of people have been interested in using my name in songs, but I am very protective about it. But when Salim-Sulaiman came to me with this track I thought it would really work for the song. This is the first time my name has been used like this and it's very exciting."
Same-same?
The original English track goes..."Oh, Beyonce, Beyonce...Oh, Shakira, Shakira". The alleged copy in Jodi Breakers goes..." Oh Bipasha, Bipasha" in the same tune.
The official song is yet to be out, but we heard the number on Bips' birthday party video, which was recently leaked over the internet.
Adds Bipasha, "All my friends are absolutely crazy about the song and we play it all the time." Ask her if she's aware of the Beyonce number and she says, "Oh really? I didn't know that."
Salim insists, "May be you should listen to the whole song first." The track will be out on television today. You can watch and decide!
