Biting into ice cream causes headache

Latest news ...'Brain freeze' is an almost universal experience-almost everyone has felt the near-instantaneous headache brought on by a bite of ice cream or slurp of ice-cold soda on the upper palate.

However, scientists are still at a loss to explain this phenomenon. Since migraine sufferers are more likely to experience brain freeze than people who don't have this often-debilitating condition, brain freeze may share a common mechanism with other types of headaches, including those brought on by the trauma of blast-related combat injuries in soldiers.

One possible link between brain freeze and other headache types is local changes in brain blood flow. In a new study, Melissa Mary Blatt, Michael Falvo, and Jessica Jasien of the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System,..click here

Cholesterol has cancer fighting benefit?

Latest news .....In a new study, scientists have argued that cholesterol may slow or stop cancer cell growth. The study, which includes a Simon Fraser University researcher, describes how cholesterol-binding proteins called ORPs may control cell growth in A Detour for Yeast Oxysterol Binding Proteins.

The scientists came to their conclusion while trying to understand how cholesterol moves around inside cells in the fat's journey to cell surfaces where it reinforces their outer membrane.

"The assumption was that ORPs bind and transport cholesterol inside cells in a similar fashion to how lipoproteins bind and move around the fat outside cells through the blood stream," Chris Beh, said...Click here

Want to look young forever?

Beauty Tips:- Beauty experts have warned that bags under the eyes are the price women pay for the dismal days of winter, making them look up to five years older.

The eyes of 5,000 women aged between 27 and 60 were studied throughout the seasons by scientists, who found winter aged women's looks by an average four years and eight months.

A lack of sunlight means paler skin, emphasising bags under the eyes and the problem is made worse by a higher level of fatigue in the winter due to a lower amount of Vitamin D, generated by the body in sunlight, and subsequently less serotonin, the body's "feel good chemical".

The results are almost as bad for men, said the study, carried out at AMA Laboratories in New York for Adonia Organics. It found 82 percent of women suffered from dark circles and puffy eyes in the winter as opposed to just 38 percent in the summer...Click Here For Read more

Why we lose our energy with age?

Women Tips:- The availability of an enzyme, known as the Lon protease, that protects cells from oxidative damage, declines as the body ages, a new study has found. The finding may help explain why humans lose energy with age and could point medicine toward new diets or pharmaceuticals to slow the aging process.

Tips for Women:- he researchers showed that when oxidative agents attack the power centers of young cells, the cells respond by calling up reinforcements of the enzyme, which breaks up and removes damaged proteins. As the cells age, they lose the ability to mobilize large numbers of Lon, the researchers reported.
Lon protects the mitochondria - tiny organisms in the cell that convert oxygen into energy. The conversion is never perfect: Some oxygen leaks and combines with other elements to create damaging oxidants. Oxidation is the process behind rust and food spoilage. In the body, oxidation can damage or destroy almost any tissue...Click here for read more

Stress Affects Human Brain: Study

Health Tips London: By studying social stress that moulds monkey immune system, researchers have shed light on how the stress of low socioeconomic status may impact human health and how individuals' bodies adapt after a shift in their social environment.
Researchers, who conducted the study with rhesus macaques at the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, insisted that if a monkey's social status changes, her immune system changes along with it.
Researchers led by Jenny Tung, PhD, said they can predict a rhesus macaque's rank within a small group by examining gene expression levels in her immune cells.
Primate researchers can tell macaques' social rank by watching them engage in competitive interactions, such as grooming and accessing food and water. Tung and her colleagues studied 10 groups of female macaques (five each) in which researchers could manipulate individuals' social rank. Before being placed into new groups, all of the macaques started out as middle rank. "In the wild, macaques inherit their social rank from their mothers" Tung said.
"But in our research, the order of introduction determines rank; the newcomer is generally lower status. When some macaques' status changed after a newcomer arrived, so did their patterns of immune system gene activity."..... click here for read more
